Mozart Kleine Credo Messe, K 192

  • 30 Brimmer Street Boston, MA, 02108 United States (map)

Solemn Mass featuring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Missa Brevis in F, K 192 for soli, chorus and orchestra, the Kleine Credo-Messe. The autograph score is dated 1774, meaning it predates the famous Jupiter Symphony, K 551, by 14 years. The latter is widely considered one of the greatest symphonies of the Classical period. Its fourth and final movement is based upon a four-note theme, which Mozart sets in a stunning five-voice fugue as the culmination of the piece. The mass to be offered on the Ascension shares a similarity and indeed its DNA with the later symphony: its Credo features the same four-note motive: in its deployment, in both the mass and symphony, Mozart sets out to achieve some of the same compositional goals to spectacular effect.
